Student Leadership
The Prefect Team
At Yardleys we believe in helping every child achieve their potential, their potential of being the best person they can be. To us every child’s Personal Development is paramount to them being successful members of society. One of the ways in which we do this is via our Leadership programme. Every student has the opportunity to take a role of responsibility, whether it is Form Captain, Vice form Captain, Year Captain, Eco Leader or Prefect in the later years. Our prefects are carefully selected through a rigorous application process. Students need to first apply and then those with successful applications will continue through to the interview stage. This will help our students develop their interview skills and give them experience at a formal College/ University/ Career application process.
Being a Prefect is all about developing ‘Soft Skills’, skills you will not necessarily learn in a classroom setting when preparing for exams.
Prefects also have the opportunity to apply for the position of Head Prefects. Each applicant is required to do a short task that would then lead to an interview with the Head Teacher. These students will go onto represent the school and become the student voice on our School Council.

I wanted to become a prefect because I see it as a valuable opportunity to contribute to the school since I have pride in being someone my peers can look up to. I aspired to be a prefect since Year 7 and have even accomplished my greater goal of becoming a senior head prefect which has allowed me to develop leadership skills and take on significant responsibility along with several other opportunities such as becoming subject ambassadors and a form captain.
Yardleys is an institution which has demonstrated immense support and motivation towards students' future and careers, encouraging me and every student to achieve their full potential. The environment, help and teachers in Yardleys provides all students with many opportunities to not only excel academically but to also flourish as individuals as it enables us to gain experience and preparation for the real world.
Becoming a prefect was a big achievement of mine but becoming apart of the Senior team and Head prefect really brings honour. I've always aspired to help students and make the school friendly and supportive as it has always been an admiration of mine since joining the school. I want younger students to look up to me and to also aim for great things so they can accomplish what they want in life. Being a head prefect isn't about the badge or title but the role; the role requires integrity, respect, maturity and responsibility. I aim to inspire, support and improve our school to help make the next generation of students feel welcomed and respected. I am deeply thankful to Yardleys for contributing to my growth, both academically and socially by giving me this outstanding opportunityMinahil Saleem
Hi everyone, my name is Minahil Saleem and I am honored to be a Deputy Head Prefect here at Yardleys. I applied for this role because I wanted to represent the school in a positive way and be a role model for younger students. As a Prefect, my aim is to help create a school environment where everyone feels included and respected. Also, as a student myself, I would like to say that every step counts, and every challenge can be overcome with patience. Good luck everyone — you can do it!

I wanted to become a prefect because I’m passionate about contributing to the school community and being a positive role model. As an active member of several sports teams, I’ve developed teamwork, discipline, and leadership skills. Outside of school, my dedication to martial arts has taught me resilience, determination, and respect — qualities I bring to my role as a student leader. Being elected Deputy Head Prefect is an honour, and I’m committed to representing the school with pride, supporting others, and helping create an environment where everyone feels valued and inspired to reach their full potential.

At Yardleys, I’ve always admired the strong foundations built on the six virtues and the three R’s, particularly respect and resilience, which mirror my own personal fundamentals of integrity and perseverance. I’ve always believed that a character’s personality is shown most through how we treat others and how we respond to challenges: values that Yardleys constantly encourages. When I was younger, I remember seeing the elder prefects visiting my primary school, guiding younger students, calmly resolving subtle conflicts and presenting themselves with confidence, which filled my younger self with admiration. Watching them, I recognised that leadership is not just about control and a position of authority, but about serving others and being someone others could rely on. That inspired me to become a prefect, and to take on both the responsibilities and an active role in helping to create a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone, where every student feels seen, heard and valued.
And thus, by becoming a prefect, it felt like I had an opportunity to give back to the school that shaped me to what I am now, and to develop my own skills in confidence and guidance. I’ve always been someone who naturally steps up; whether as a form captain, previous year captain, or in group-work projects, each role has helped me grow into a level-headed and understanding leader. As a head prefect now, I carry with me the same values that first inspired me: to continue to lead with resilence, demonstrate kindness and represent Yardleys effectively. In the end, I am hoping to be the kind of leader I once looked up to: someone who listens, supports, and makes a difference hope to continue leading not by title, but by example, showing that true leadership begins with compassion and the confidence to uplift others.

Serving as Senior Deputy Prefect has been a proud and defining moment in my journey at Yardleys School, providing me with the opportunity to strengthen my leadership, confidence, and sense of responsibility. Over the past four years, I have grown immensely both academically and personally, thanks to the unwavering support and dedication of the staff who have continually encouraged me to strive for excellence. Through my previous roles as Form Captain, Inclusion Leader, and as a member of the Yardleys Scholar Programme, I have developed essential skills in communication, organisation, and teamwork, all of which have prepared me to serve the school community with integrity and commitment. These experiences have taught me the true meaning of leadership — to guide, support, and inspire others to reach their full potential. I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in me as Senior Deputy Prefect and for the opportunity to give back to a school that has played such a vital role in shaping my character, values, and aspirations.
