Student Leadership
The Prefect Team
At Yardleys we believe in helping every child achieve their potential, their potential of being the best person they can be. To us every child’s Personal Development is paramount to them being successful members of society. One of the ways in which we do this is via our Leadership programme. Every student has the opportunity to take a role of responsibility, whether it is Form Captain, Vice form Captain, Year Captain, Eco Leader or Prefect in the later years. Our prefects are carefully selected through a rigorous application process. Students need to first apply and then those with successful applications will continue through to the interview stage. This will help our students develop their interview skills and give them experience at a formal College/ University/ Career application process.
Being a Prefect is all about developing ‘Soft Skills’, skills you will not necessarily learn in a classroom setting when preparing for exams.
Prefects also have the opportunity to apply for the position of Head Prefects. Each applicant is required to do a short task that would then lead to an interview with the Head Teacher. These students will go onto represent the school and become the student voice on our School Council.
Mohammed Rehan – Head Prefect
Becoming a prefect was a choice - a choice to make after self-observation and looking inward onto our qualities and flaws, to see if we are able to take the responsibility and authority that comes with the role and how we would use it to the best of our abilities to make our school a better learning environment for all. I decided quite early on in my time here at Yardleys that I'd like to become a prefect or even head prefect. When the time finally came for prefect applications, I applied, got through to the interview, and after being chosen to be a prefect, was also selected to apply for the role of head prefect. This is something I was immensely proud of, but I also acknowledged that it was not just luck or being chosen because of who I am; it was also hard work, preparation, and determination. While helping out at events and open evenings, I observed that representing the school and our values is vital. I worked my way up from form captain to prefect to head prefect, and I hope this can inspire other students at Yardleys. Applying to become head prefect, for me personally, was vowing to represent the school at all times, displaying respect and integrity, along with all of our school values. In conclusion, I am deeply grateful to the staff who have taken the time to meticulously go through the interview processes and for seeing me as worthy of my role as head prefect.
Oluwaferanmi Adeyemo - Head Prefect
Yardleys School is not just a school where teachers teach particular subjects to their students, taking in all the wisdom and knowledge needed to excel in those subjects as quickly as possible. Instead, Yardleys School is a school that gradually takes us step by step to that door that we'll eventually open later on when we leave this school. Yardleys School is a guide for me, a guide that will successfully lead me to achieve many great things. Yardleys School provides many great opportunities for having responsibilities, responsibilities that I would surely need to have embraced and nurtured to help me later on in my life. Yardleys School has given me the chance to learn, not just my subjects, but about the way of life. I have been given many roles at Yardleys, such as being a form captain and a PE Ambassador. Now, all these roles that I have been given come with responsibilities, and I strongly believe that having responsibilities is an amazing way of knowing the real world and is a way of successfully living a meaningful life. I am very grateful for all the responsibilities that this school has given me.
Luvika Kaul - Deputy Prefect
As a student at Yardleys School, I am proud to say that I'm a prefect. I have been given the leadership role for inclusion, which will definitely give me the ability to expand my skills and vary them while carrying out my responsibilities. It is a privilege to be growing up in this school environment. I have not only gained quality teaching but also a chance and an opportunity to showcase my capabilities. I believe that before being listened to, you must gain the respect of others through an empathetic nature. This is a process, and I'm glad that my starting point is from here.
Paige Nelson - Deputy Prefect
As a student at Yardleys School, I have been given many opportunities, from being a form captain to prefect and now to deputy head prefect! Being deputy head prefect has taught me many important life skills and has helped me become a better individual by refining my weaknesses. I have been able to be more open-minded and confident when dealing with situations within the school. This role, in particular, has helped me to expand my skills as I have had to uphold my responsibilities and do activities that I wouldn't normally do in a classroom. I have also been given the opportunity to help improve other students' experiences while they are at Yardleys. I am a hardworking individual who isn't afraid to face a challenge. I believe I am passionate about the role, and I would describe myself as an open and honest person who doesn't believe in misleading others and tries to be fair in everything I do.
Muhammad Zain Hussain - Deputy Prefect
I'm a dedicated student who loves all my subjects equally, but I find computer science and IT more fun. I am a dedicated student who loves to do work and complete it with high quality. I persevere through tasks I find hard, and throughout the time I've been at Yardley's, it has greatly improved my knowledge and skills that I may wish to use in the future. Some of the things/skills that have improved during my time at Yardley's are teamwork, confidence, and self-esteem. I believe studying at Yardley's brings many benefits to a student that they can use in the future. I am very grateful to have such a position at Yardley's, and I'm very grateful to the staff who have chosen me for this role. As a prefect, I will help others who need help and improve their skills as well as mine throughout the last year I have at this wonderful school. I truly believe that with hard work and dedication, as well as the wonderful staff at this school, ANYONE can achieve their lifelong dreams.
Zainab Mehmood - Deputy Prefect
I wanted to become a prefect because I am a hardworking, polite, and passionate student who follows the school charter and therefore wanted to be a virtuous role model for other pupils at the school. Throughout my time at Yardleys, I have had lots of experience with roles of responsibility, for instance, Form Captain, Vice-Captain, and Eco Leader. Additionally, I volunteered in the school library throughout Year 9 where I gained confidence and communication skills. Thus, my particular role as a prefect is helping students develop their literacy skills and working closely with the school librarian, Ms Keskinkilinc.
Olivia Johnson - Deputy Prefect
I am very grateful for being given an opportunity as part of the Senior Prefect team. As a student at Yardleys School, I want to make sure other young students have great opportunities and experiences at school. I have realized over the 4 years of my time at Yardleys that anyone can achieve their goals if they try their best and put their mind to it. As a Prefect, I ensure that I will be hardworking as much as I can and will always put effort into everything I do. Becoming a Prefect will help give me chances to improve some skills, like communication and taking leadership in different situations that we may not do in lessons. I am excited to work with the other Prefects to help make the school a great place. While being at Yardleys, I have been involved in trips to universities and colleges, going to sport competitions as part of the extracurricular and enrichment activities in which everyone can take part. Being part of the senior team is a great achievement as I had to compete with many other Prefects to get this role. If you ever have a chance to become a Prefect, I definitely recommend trying for it because it is a great role to have in the school.
Asima Waheed - Deputy Prefect
I'm a dedicated student who enjoys sports and cooking! I have gained so much experience throughout Yardley School, including being the school's game changer for girls' football, also becoming a prefect and then a senior prefect! Each of these experiences will increase my knowledge, confidence, and understanding for the subjects I want to study in the future, including my leadership and teamworking skills! I have been very grateful for being given the opportunity to gain the three school values by given the role of a senior prefect. I believe I am a hardworking student and will make Yardley School proud before leaving, also making the people around me proud. However, being a prefect is a great achievement, and I believe that being a prefect would benefit me by opening new doors for me in the future, since the role will teach me many important life skills which will hopefully support my development in becoming a good role model for others.
Deen Mohsin - Deputy Prefect
Yardleys School means a lot to me. I really like learning the subjects I enjoy doing to help me get a decent mark for every exam. Throughout my time here, I have shown that I can be a successful student by following the right path. Here at Yardleys, resilience is shown by everyone and everything, meaning no matter how many mistakes you have ever made, as long as you never give up, you will reach the target you have been trying to achieve. As a student at this school, I believe that the more effort and work we put into things, the better the future becomes. I am currently a PE ambassador at the school, which has helped me show how responsible I can be towards others in and out of school, proving that I can be a good role model. Being a prefect is a great opportunity to show self-confidence. I am an excellent role model to others as I lead by example.
Shafaah Akhtar - Deputy Prefect
I'd like to thank the school for all their support and opportunities, just like this one. Being a part of the Senior prefect team is not something I take lightly, and I am very thankful to have had a chance to represent the school. It is truly a wonderful place, not only to get an education but to be heard and supported through this long journey as I look forward to what is to come in our last year here at Yardleys School.
